A July birthstone, rubies are the ancient hotness that brings modern heat

It's only fitting that the birthstone for a month of sizzling temperatures in the western hemisphere is one associated with romance and love. Whether that's a slow walk on the beach with your beloved or a more heated cabana fling, you'll find rubies bringing some royalty to the party. Ruby lore holds that the gems have powers of protection, invulnerability in battle, the ability to reincarnate as royalty (I guess if the whole invulnerability thing didn't work out), healing, and uh.... the ability to boil water. 

These are a balanced color right on the cusp between pink and red; a romantic deep reddish pink. These are the color of Valentine's Day, sultry red lipstick, romance and mystery with a bite of danger. I would say these still lurk more firmly on the side of pink in bright lighting, but especially as the sizes get larger, or the light gets lower, you will see red. This is probably the most traditional natural ruby color; most natural rubies will be in this crimson spectrum and show distinct dark pink verging on red depending on the individual gem. There is some slight shade variation in these; if you would like slightly lighter/brighter vs. darker pink let us know. The differences are minor. If you prefer a vivid pink without the red shift, take a look at our Pink Ruby listing. If you want a pure red with the smallest possible pink undertone, our Pigeon Blood Red Rubies (it's an industry name for the color- we didn't make it up!) would be a better choice. These are right in the middle.

Notes: (1.) If you have our Pigeon Blood Red rubies, these are really similar, just with subtle undertone differences in bright lighting. You probably don't need both in the same size and might be hard-pressed to tell the difference. Sorting these with a high-CRI full-spectrum jewelry light is challenging, let's put it that way.  (2.) If you're looking for a more fire-engine, orange-based red, that's a harder ask… our red Helenite studs are about the only option there.

How to choose a stud earring size:

3mm is a tiny stud earring perfect for cartilage and multiple piercings. 4mm is a dainty stud earring that also works well for cartilage piercings. 5mm is a good minimalist everyday stud earring size. 6mm is large, but still casual. 8mm are statement stud earrings with a bold look. What to know about gemstone jewelry:

Gems (yes, even lab created gems!) are individual pieces of nature's art with minor variations in pattern, color, size, and shape. Gem sizes can vary +/- .2mm. Often, large gems are darker than small ones. I do promise you'll be happy with them, and accept exchanges as well as special requests like "Prefer darker green over lighter" which I will do my best to match within my stock. Some gems are fragile and should not go in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
