About Distinction Jewelry: Established in 2006, Distinction Jewelry is a woman-owned fine jewelry micro-business dedicated to lasting quality and clean luxury. All our production takes place in the US, both in our rural Oregon studio and with trusted US partners. By purchasing from us, you directly support real people rather than a large corporation with outsourced labor and ruthless cost-cutting. Your purchases allow us to support ourselves by doing what we love, and we are eternally grateful to you!

Think of fine jewelry as the antithesis of fast fashion: Our jewelry is crafted to endure for decades or even generations with proper treatment. Our gemstones are ethically sourced with meticulous care and expertise, and we offer a range of affordable, sustainable lab-grown gems. Our reclaimed precious metals are refined to match the quality and purity of newly mined metals, without the environmental and human impact of destructive mining practices.

The Gemstones

Virtually all blue topaz started out white, and was irradiated to bring out the blue coloring. This is such common practice that I rarely believe a dealer who tells me blue topaz rough is natural, in no small part because it's impossible for my lab equipment to tell the difference. But when one of my most honest and knowledgeable sources represented this as natural, I took notice.

He tells me that he bought this parcel of rough from someone he trusts, and he believes it because: 1. The rough was of mixed shades of white to blue with lots of it being white. Treated rough is very uniform in color. 2. The rough tended to have a lot of inclusions, and people don't tend to pay to have included material irradiated (a rather expensive process as it's done in an actual reactor).

I purchased the lot from him and have noticed minor color variations and inclusions I'm not used to seeing in treated Sky blue topaz. The color is also a different shade from the treated material I've handled; it actually looks exactly like aquamarine which is a little "greyer" than the blue of treated Sky blue topaz. So I'm fairly confident this is very rare on the market natural blue topaz.

Our gems are ethically sourced with care and knowledge. They are real, come from small businesses, and support small miners and families around the globe.

Gems are individual pieces of nature's art and have minor variation in pattern, color, size, and shape. Unlike synthetic gems, few are exactly alike.

    Sky Blue Topaz

These are stunning stones, and it’s SO exciting that they are “real”, not radiated like most blue topaz are. They really catch the light and sparkle. The color is subtle enough that they work nicely with many wardrobe choices. The stones are clear, clean, and gorgeous. The gold settings show them off, the “workwomanship” is perfect. A friend even asked me if these were Aquamarines! I could not be more pleased, and find myself wearing them every chance I get.
