I purchased these personally in a tiny village in Namibia, direct from the people who collected them. They walk the desert with a sharp eye for these small treasures exposed by the erosion of wind and time. Rarely gem grade, these rare demantoid garnets are one of the only resources available to those who gather them. I paid a generous price to a steady stream of collectors who would vanish into huts made of corrugated metal, strung-together soda cans, and scrap lumber and emerge hopefully with hands extended, their precious findings in their palms. One of them was a man (pictured) who had taken in many orphaned children from surrounding villages and had many mouths to feed. I am testing the market for non-traditional jewelry made from stones like these, and hope to raise enough money through their sale to return to that village and others like it and purchase more.

These earrings need to be treated with a bit more care than our standard faceted stone earrings as the settings aren't quite as secure. Sometimes we add a touch of adhesive to help back up the holding power of the prongs; if you would prefer this not be done, just let us know. How to choose a stud earring size:

These irregularly shaped crystals average from 4mm to 5.5 or 6mm depending on where you measure.
