Spinel has repeatedly been mistaken for ruby in royal crown jewels, and many famous "rubies" turned out to be spinel. The black form of spinel imitates black diamonds. Spinel also grows well in laboratory conditions to imitate certain gemstones, which is how we ended up here, with a blue spinel that beautifully imitates the highest quality aquamarine.
Aquamarine is an odd stone, in that even in its most prized deepest shades, it lacks a certain saturation, seeming to have a perpetually grey undertone. Spinel mimics this as perfectly as it does the pink shades of ruby. These resemble high quality aquamarine; a strong but cool/desaturated blue. Mined aquamarine has gotten scarce and so light in color in recent years that one can barely detect a hint of blue, unless one wants to pay outlandish sums of money.
These are spinel, not aquamarine, but if you're after the look of good aquamarine these are fire. This isn't a vivid blue, it's a stonewashed denim that sometimes looks more saturated in full sunlight. They are perfect for when you want color, but don't want it to clash with other shades — they are a perfect "accessory" blue you could wear all week. There is some slight color variation in these, with some stones a lighter blue and some darker.

Lab created gems are not infinitely available in every possible color forever. And sometimes, colors change or stop being available - which is a good reason to collect these affordable gems when you see something you love for sale. Growers do go out of business or discontinue colors.

What to know about gemstone jewelry:
Gems (yes, even lab created gems!) are individual pieces of nature's art with minor variations in pattern, color, size, and shape. Gem sizes can vary +/- .2mm. Often, large gems are darker than small ones. I do promise you'll be happy with them, and accept exchanges as well as special requests like "Prefer darker green over lighter" which I will do my best to match within my stock. Some gems are fragile and should not go in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
